MCL GRAND THEATRE

RENNOVATION STUDY

Lewisville, Texas

Opened in 2011, the Lewisville Grand Theater (MCL Grand) has become a hub for community arts, housing Huffines Performance Hall, a Black Box Theater, Recital Hall, art gallery, classrooms, and Wayne Ferguson Plaza. After more than a decade of heavy use, the facility faced aging infrastructure, outdated performance systems, limited storage, and circulation challenges, prompting the City of Lewisville to initiate a renovation study.

The City engaged TheatreDNA to lead a comprehensive facility assessment and develop a renovation strategy. The process included in-depth tours, staff interviews, and system reviews to identify deficiencies and opportunities across performance, support, and public spaces. Recommendations focused on improving audience experience, artist support, and operational efficiency. Priorities included upgrading theatrical lighting, rigging, and A/V networking in Huffines Hall; introducing telescopic seating and acoustic treatments in the Black Box; modernizing Recital Hall systems; enhancing lobby concessions, signage, and wayfinding; improving dressing rooms, classrooms, and art gallery functionality; and adding needed storage facilities. Costs were modeled in three phased priorities totaling $3 million+ with line-item construction and soft costs.

The renovation master plan positions the MCL Grand to meet modern production standards, enhance hospitality, and expand community impact for decades to come. Importantly, the City of Lewisville has funded the first phase of priority renovations, which is currently in design. Once implemented, the project will ensure safer, more versatile, and more welcoming facilities for artists, audiences, and civic stakeholders.
