AUBURN STATE THEATRE
FEASIBILITY STUDY
Auburn, California
The historic Auburn State Theatre, a nearly century-old community landmark in downtown Auburn, initiated a feasibility study to evaluate future expansion opportunities and strengthen its role as a regional cultural destination. The challenge was balancing preservation of the beloved theatre’s historic identity with evolving audience expectations, operational demands, and long-term community growth. TheatreDNA was engaged to lead the study, bringing expertise in cultural venue planning, operations, and market analysis. The process included interviews with civic and arts leaders, benchmarking comparable historic venues, and extensive community engagement through public surveys and stakeholder outreach. Auburn State Theatre leadership also toured peer facilities and consulted organizations within the League of Historic American Theatres to identify operational and programming opportunities. The study explored expansion viability, audience development, flexible programming models, and strategies for enhancing arts and entertainment offerings while maintaining the theatre’s historic character and community- centered mission. The resulting feasibility framework provided Auburn State Theatre with data-driven guidance for future planning and investment decisions. By identifying realistic opportunities for expansion and broader cultural programming, the study positioned the theatre to better serve residents, attract new audiences, and preserve its legacy as an enduring civic and artistic asset for the Auburn community.
